Camomile, which originated in Asia Minor (modern western Turkey), comes in different varieties. Boxed Camomile or "Chamomilla recutita" – usually known as ‘German’ or ‘wild’ camomile – is recognisable for its small and rather flattened flowers with a golden centre. Camomile is harvested wild in full in Eastern Europe but, closer to home, is carefully cultivated.
"Roman Camomile" or "Chamaemelum nobile" can be found in prairies and in sandy earth all
across Western and South Europe. Only the flower and its conical capitula are used.
Polyphenols and essential oils with very high ester content in all the different varieties ensure anti-inflammatory and anti-spasm properties. Camomile is used for difficult digestion and also in dermatology.
