This plant – Mentha x. piperita – is a man-made variety dating from the 17th century, a hybrid result from three mint varieties. The most important active substance is its essential oil (0.5 - 4%). Thanks to its high phenol acid content (7%), peppermint also contains a very high proportion of flavonoids (sometimes over 17%).

When used in infusions, peppermint stimulates gastric secretions and is particularly recommended for difficult digestion when used fresh or dry. It has many other virtues, however, such as its anti-oxidant properties. With its strong menthol scent, peppermint is always useful for colds and to clear the voice in the morning.

Peppermint is ideal in combination with lime tree and also with liquorices, green anise and verbena.
