Our values & commitments
Corporate Social Responsibility
As plant specialists, we are very strongly and in many ways exposed to "sustainability" constraints.
- We are producers of food products, from plants harvested or cultivated all over the world. This should lead us to take into account issues such as excessive pesticide use, soil erosion, poverty of local populations, irrigation and lack of water...
- We package these products in bags and boxes, using paper, cardboard and plastic, all of which are limited resources that can potentially generate pollution.
- We are located in Le Puy-en-Velay, a rural area, landlocked, not very favourable to industry, which gives us a responsibility in terms of land use planning and local life.
- Finally, as an agri-food company, our working conditions are demanding and sensitive in terms of occupational diseases.I
n this context, we understand that sustainable development is not a whim nor a trendy issue for us, but an unavoidable one.
An ethical and sustainable philosophy
We are an old Auvergne company, which has built itself on values of simplicity, rationality, honesty and involvement in its territory, its environment and with its employees. A sense of responsibility and reason, common sense, ethics, respect for our employees and consumers, it is a whole, a way of thinking on a daily basis, not a marketing argument nor a trend.
A "less is more" global vision of the production cycle.
Our raw materials
Our original business is herbal infusions. All our branded products are ORGANIC.
We want to promote environmental protection and consumer health.
We are members of the ETP, the Ethical Tea Partnership, an association that works collectively to improve the quality of tea crops and limit their impact on the environment.
We encourage fair trade, whether under the Max Havelaar banner or more recently under the UTZ banner, we are pioneers. PAGÈS was the first tea and herbal tea brand to launch UTZ products in France in 2013!
We are committed to working in France, where our consumers live!
Today, we have chosen to actively participate in the redeployment of a French production sector: vervain from the Gard, lavender from Provence, gentian from Auvergne, chamomile from Anjou...
Eco-design of packaging
As plant specialists, we are also a conditioner. As such, we generate packaging. Both to preserve resources and to limit waste, it is our responsibility to design them with common sense, known as eco-design.
- Removal of flaps.
- Removal of cellophane (while ensuring the inviolability of the box): annually we save 60 tons of plastic.
- Reduction in packaging weight: annually, we save 25 tonnes of cardboard boxes.
Choices not guided by business considerations:
- A glue-free bag: historically, the paper of the tea bag is impregnated with glue in order to be sealed by gluing. We have chosen to reject this, unlike the core market and its leader.
- We do not want our consumers to infuse hot water with glue... soluble in hot water.
Recycling: at PAGÈS, our choice is recycled cardboard. As a matter of balance and common sense, we only use cardboard boxes with controlled and limited levels of mineral oil residues in order not to run any health risks.
A site that limits its environmental impact
Our site was built in the 1970s, but it is constantly evolving, driven by our growth. We manage this development based on our commitment to do things right, for people and the environment.
A single-site organization
We rely on a centralized plant on a single site, both in terms of upstream and downstream storage.
We have chosen to install translucent cladding ramps to favour natural lighting.
We have made it a standard practice to install presence detectors and disconnect lighting: lighting where it is needed, not everywhere and all the time.
Due to our activity, we have long insisted on an optimal adjustment of our machines in order to limit plant losses, our emissions are limited.
And we have chosen not to reject them into the public network, so we have set up our own particularly ecological installation. It is based on the transformation of our organic waste into plants in the form of sludge. Phyto-purification. Overall, we have no rejections!
Between the production area where our machines operate and therefore release calories by the Joules effect and the warehouses, the gap in terms of heating requirements is very large.
We have installed a network of heat recovery and hot air reinjection systems in the warehouses.
We do not need to heat our warehouses from an external source.
The creation of a carbon sink
Our production site is located in a rural area and has a relatively large land reserve.
We have decided to take advantage of these available spaces to take action for the environment. Thus, part of our land has been replanted with aromatic plants.
Another is in the process of planting a coppice with a very short willow rotation. Willow cultivation has the particularity of being the fastest way to fix atmospheric carbon in the form of wood lignin.
We plan to use this wood to heat our offices by modifying the burner of our current gas boiler.
A company that respects people
The crisis does not spare us, our customers are demanding, our competitors aggressive. If we want to keep our jobs, we must be efficient and competitive. That doesn't mean being slavers and exploiting people! PAGES employees are not interchangeable numbers
- Good working conditions
Being responsible also means ensuring good working conditions for your employees and the sustainability of their jobs (and therefore of their company).
- Realism not slavery: we make it a point of honour to find the right balance between competitiveness and working conditions.
- Refusal of 4X8 and 5X8: our activity has a strong component
seasonal and historically requires a 3x8 operation. We refuse 4x8 and 5x8 operations, which are unacceptable for employees.
- Smoothing of the activity: our activity is seasonal. In times of high consumption, we need to produce more. We have succeeded in further anticipating our production in order to smooth production over the year.
- Equipment: all our working conditions are constantly being challenged. Improving ergonomics, yes, turning people into robots, no.
Re-internalization of certain tasks
We have decided as a conscious company not to use staff as a short-term adjustment variable. For example, we have re-internalized activities that were previously outsourced abroad. This applies in particular to the manual packaging services that we carry out ourselves.
Values that are held outside the company
When you believe in something, when you are convinced of its validity, you are enthusiastic and want to convince your partners!
- With our suppliers
Long-term partnerships: we believe in the stability of our relationships with our suppliers and we always treat them with respect.
- Relocation and proximity: doing fair trade is above all about making French companies work. Thus, we have transferred the majority of our supplies to French companies.
- Transparency on products: by working with reliable suppliers, on long-term and geographically close relationships, you inevitably have better control over your supplies.
- With our customers
Honesty and transparency: by always emphasizing ethics and long-term trust, we reject any dishonesty. We reject any misuse in sending samples to our customers and always submit products that are strictly representative of our production.
- We provide our customers with complete transparency on our products.
Customer conviction: as a French supplier, we go even further by encouraging our customers to choose eco-friendly packaging.
A company and a territory
An exemplary territory
We are based in Haute-Loire, a discreet region if ever there was one, where the watchword seems to be "let's live happily, let's live hidden".
Here, there is no race for excessive economic development. We have a preserved environment, we protect it.
We are aware of the quality of our environment, as the contrast with other regions is so striking, and of our responsibility to preserve it.
Produce in France and here
We have been herbalists since 1859. Located in the Velay in the heart of the Massif Central and the Auvergne, our presence here is no coincidence.
Verbena, Gentian, Blueberries... our region is, with Provence, the main terroir of aromatic and medicinal plants in France.
Today, our main activity is to package plants from all over the world.
Economic difficulties are strong when faced with imports from countries with low labour costs, but we are struggling because we still believe in it.
Sustainable development is also about striving to continue to produce in France.
Is it possible and economically acceptable to re-establish a French infusion plant industry?
Over the years, French plant crops have been abandoned in favour of imported plants and other more profitable and subsidized crops.
PAGÈS, a major player in the packaging of infusion plants in France and a responsible company, wants to be involved in the relocation of a real French infusion plant industry. "French" should always be synonymous with quality and "good" in the world of plants.
We remain convinced that there are solutions to produce quality and economically interesting French infusion plants.
An ancient territory
We have actively participated in the reintroduction of local infusion plants cultivation.
In 2013, in collaboration with a local integration company, we introduced infusion plants around our manufacturing site in order to actively participate in the revival of local self-production.
A company involved with the local population
We are very involved in the orientation and training of young people (through company visits, counselling, internships and work-study positions).
We are also involved in the quality of local life, by supporting sports events (15km from Le Puy, Grand trail from Saint Jacques...) and cultural events (Fêtes du roi de l'oiseau, La Chaise Dieu Festival...) financially but also by participating in the animation.
We are proud to be a company that does things right, both economically and for its customers and employees.
The major ecological problems facing our planet (pollution, depletion of natural resources, loss of biodiversity, intensive agriculture, urbanization) teach us that the actions of each individual or legal entity sometimes have irreversible consequences on the future of the earth and on future generations.
As a company, PAGÈS has a real responsibility to contribute to the preservation of the planet for future generations. And in this, we choose to be exemplary.
